A Princess Playing Games
Lana Del Rey
It's impossible to mention the name Lana Del Rey without a chorus of haters raising their fists in ire at the beautiful New Yorker's gumption to actually want to be a singer.
How dare she open her bee-stung lips and release music.
However, Del Rey - real name Lizzy Grant - is a 'singer' and her new album, Born to Die, is worth reviewing just as much as the next internet-spawned pop sensation, regardless of how she sounded in her appearance on Saturday Night Live.
Born to Die is actually Del Rey's second album - the 25-year-old released Lana Del Rey A.K.A Lizzy Grant in early 2010. You can expect a re-release of this LP later in the year.
But the newest 15-track offering is a heavily produced vehicle designed to deliver Del Rey's smoky, sexy vocals singing lusty songs filled with heartache and angst against a backdrop of strings and hip-hop beats.
There are some beautiful moments; the title track is a piece of gorgeous, orchestral-drenched pop perfection, but something'ÃÂs amiss.
To my mind, Del Rey sounds like an immature version of the phenomenally talented Cat Power. She has a decent set of pipes but hasn't quite found her 'voice'.
The three pre-released singles - Born to Die, Blue Jeans and the hugely successful Video Games - are this album's standout tracks.
Although at this point she's still the next big thing, it will be interesting to watch her journey.
