It’s just a five-track EP, but there’s enough here to hail Tessa & The Typecast as genuine contenders. Singer Tessa Pavilach is a little bit Washington, a little bit Kate Miller-Heidke, but she also has her own thing going on. Co-produced by Ricky Maymi (from The Brian Jonestown Massacre), the killer opening cut, Painter, showcases some vocal gymnastics. And yet, the song still sounds intimate, with elegant cello and lush piano. Formed at Ballarat Grammar, Tessa & The Typecast have come a long way in a short time. Can’t wait for the album.
